Located at the very tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, Northport is not a town you just “pass through.” If you are in Northport, you are there specifically to enjoy its magic. It is a peaceful, secluded escape away from the hustle and bustle of Traverse City, making it the perfect destination to host your family and friends.
I am always so excited to work with Mimi and Joel, who have poured their hearts into owning and operating this fabulous venue since 2016. It’s no surprise that Willowbrook Mill was voted one of the Top 10 wedding venues in Northern Michigan! Here is an insider’s look at why this venue is such a spectacular choice for your wedding day.
This past October, I had the honor of capturing Lauren and Ryan’s stunning wedding at Willowbrook Mill, one of Northern Michigan’s most picturesque wedding venues. This cozy venue, nestled in the heart of Northport, is perfect for couples seeking an intimate setting with rustic elegance and a touch of Northern charm.
Preparation: Capturing the Day’s Start
Lauren and Ryan booked me for six hours of photography coverage, including a second photographer. Adding a second photographer to your package is such a smart decision—it allows us to capture every detail of both sides of the bridal party simultaneously.
Siena (my associate photographer) captured Lauren and her bridal party as they got ready at her parents’ home in Traverse City. She focused on heartfelt moments like the reactions to Lauren’s dress and detail shots of the beautiful bridal accessories. Meanwhile, I was with Ryan and the groomsmen in Northport, documenting their relaxed stroll down to the marina. Ryan’s “Abbey Road”-style photo with his groomsmen crossing the street was a fun highlight! These split moments truly add depth and variety to your wedding gallery.

The Vibe: The Sweet Spot Between Casual and Rustic Elegance
Willowbrook Mill describes itself as the sweet spot between casual and elegant, and I couldn’t agree more. The interior aesthetic is an absolute dream to photograph.
The space features a stunning exposed rafter ceiling draped with elegant chandeliers, gorgeous hardwood floors, and a massive rustic stone fireplace that couples love to decorate with lush florals.
For Lauren and Ryan’s October wedding, they embraced this aesthetic perfectly. They had a larger guest list and chose to get married inside with guests seated right at their harvest tables. The interior was decorated with a beautiful fall vibe that matched the peak autumn colors outside. Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour with a harpist playing softly in the background, setting the perfect tone for the evening.
The Celebration: Timeless Moments
Lauren and Ryan opted for a family-style dinner, which added a cozy and communal vibe to the reception. Their decision to forgo traditional wedding party entrances and keep things relaxed was a perfect fit for their personalities. With a curated playlist over the sound system and informal group photos throughout the night, their celebration felt uniquely them.
We made time for stunning couple portraits, utilizing the outdoor areas around Willowbrook Mill and nearby scenic locations for a mix of romantic and playful moments. The couple also made sure to get photos with each of their guests during dinner, ensuring everyone felt included in their special day.

Because Northport is nestled right on the water, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to portrait locations.
Peterson Park: Drive just six minutes down the road for a first look or couples photos at Peterson Park. It features a stunning rocky shore and a beautiful overlook that makes for breathtaking, sweeping portraits.
The Marina: Head down to the local vibrant marina for some beautiful waterfront couples photos.
The Bridge & Downtown: For Lauren and Ryan, we stayed close to the venue. We shot their bridal party photos right outside on the iconic Willowbrook bridge and walking down the charming streets of Northport.
The Venue Property: The charming stone patio beside the creek is a gorgeous spot. During Lauren and Ryan’s wedding, we took full advantage of the peak fall colors right on the property.
PRO TIP: If you want a variety of backgrounds for your photos, schedule a little extra time during cocktail hour for us to sneak away to the shoreline!
