Here are my top tips to help you plan your family gathering photo session, ensuring it’s a seamless and enjoyable experience for all.

Picking a location that suits your family’s needs is key. Here are some of my favorite spots in Northern Michigan:
- The Homestead Resort: Perfect for families staying at the resort. You can step out of your condo and onto a stunning beach or explore the natural dunes on the property. It’s convenient for families with young children or older relatives since everything is close by.
- Glen Haven: This historic village offers a unique mix of charm and adventure. With bathroom access and nearby dunes, it’s great for families who want a blend of history and natural beauty.
- Esch Road Beach: A short walk from the parking lot takes you to a serene beach and a forest trail. With bathroom facilities and easy access, it’s an ideal spot for families of all ages.
- Your Airbnb or Home: Many families choose to have their sessions at their rental properties. This allows everyone to get ready at their own pace, and we can photograph individual families while waiting for the rest to join.
2. Timing is Everything
The time of day can make a big difference for both lighting and your family’s energy levels.
- Morning Sessions: These are great for families with young kids, as they’re usually more cheerful earlier in the day.
- Evening Sessions: While the golden hour light is magical, it’s better suited for families without little ones who may be tired at the end of the day.
- Overcast Days: Don’t worry about the lack of sunlight—soft, diffused light is perfect for photos!

3. Relax and Let the Kids Lead
Kids bring energy and spontaneity to family sessions, and that’s a good thing! Here’s how to embrace it:
- Focus on Fun: Let the session be about exploration and play rather than forced smiles. At places like Sleeping Bear Dunes, kids naturally engage with their surroundings, which makes for genuine, joyful photos.
- Don’t Stress About Tears: With large families, someone is bound to have a moment. No problem! I’ll capture other groups or individuals while they take a break or grab a snack.
- Avoid Bribes: Candy or treats often backfire, so focus on making the session fun instead.

Family gathering sessions are all about variety. In just over an hour, we’ll have time for:
