When it comes to Northern Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes, Pyramid Point Trail stands out as one of the most breathtaking spots. This location offers incredible views of Lake Michigan, dramatic dunes, and scenic forests that transform beautifully throughout the seasons. However, Pyramid Point is not for the faint of heart—this spot is ideal for adventurous couples who don’t mind a 40-minute hike to capture epic, once-in-a-lifetime photos. If you’re planning an engagement session or an elopement adventure, Pyramid Point is a fantastic option, but it’s best suited for those who embrace the journey as much as the destination.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing several couples at Pyramid Point, each session showcasing the unique magic of a different season. Below, I’ll share three unforgettable sessions and some tips to help you plan your own adventure session or intimate wedding at Pyramid Point.

A Summer Engagement Session: Molly and Colton

Molly and Colton booked an extended engagement session to fully embrace Pyramid Point’s beauty. We began our adventure on a warm June evening, taking advantage of the late summer sunsets. The vibrant greens of the forest and iconic birch trees along the trail made for stunning photos even before we reached the dunes.

Once we arrived at the overlook, Molly and Colton’s silhouettes against the golden sky and rolling dunes created some of my favorite photos. They brought multiple outfits to switch things up along the way—light, casual attire for the hike and more polished outfits for the dramatic views at the top. The effort they put into their session really paid off, and the result was a gallery filled with variety, personality, and the essence of a Northern Michigan summer.

A Winter Engagement with Dogs: Jennie and Tyler

Pyramid Point in winter is like stepping into another world. Jennie and Tyler chose this location for their winter engagement session and brought along their two dogs. Adding pets to a photo session is always a great idea—they bring energy, authenticity, and make everyone feel more at ease.

The mix of sand and snow created a surreal landscape, with vibrant blue water peeking through in the distance. Jennie and Tyler dressed to impress, starting with casual Boho outfits for playful shots with their dogs before changing into formalwear for romantic photos at the overlook. Jennie’s solid blue dress against the snow was pure magic.

An Autumn Elopement Adventure: Amber and Rodney

For couples who want a truly intimate elopement experience, Pyramid Point is a spectacular choice, especially in the fall. Amber and Rodney’s October elopement was a day to remember, with vibrant autumn colors lighting up the trail.

Amber and Rodney embraced the adventure, wearing their full wedding attire for the hike. They incorporated a heartfelt sand ceremony with jars they had customized with their family emblem and wedding date. After exchanging vows at the overlook, they celebrated with a champagne toast (non-alcoholic sparkling wine) and ended their day with family photos back at the trailhead. Pyramid Point’s fall beauty truly set the stage for a memorable wedding day.

Planning Your Session or Elopement at Pyramid Point Trail

If Pyramid Point Trail is on your radar, here are a few tips to help you make the most of this unique location:

  1. Be Prepared for a Hike: The trail to the overlook is roughly 1.5 miles round trip, with some uphill portions. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring a change of footwear if needed for your photos.

  2. Choose the Right Time of Year: Each season offers something unique. Summer boasts lush greenery and vivid sunsets, winter delivers ethereal snow-dusted landscapes, and fall is perfect for rich colors and crisp air.

  3. Pack Light but Smart: Whether it’s outfits, props, or personal touches (like Amber and Rodney’s sand ceremony jars), keep it manageable for the hike. A backpack works best.

  4. Consider an Extended Session: For engagement sessions, an extended session allows time to explore the trail, capture multiple looks, and enjoy a more relaxed pace. If you’re eloping, it gives you flexibility to take in the moment without feeling rushed.

  5. Bring Your Pets: Dogs are always welcome in my sessions and make a wonderful addition to your photos. Just be sure they’re ready for a hike and bring a friend to take care of them for the dune portion so we can take some photos of just the two of you as well!

Why I Love Pyramid Point for Photography

While I don’t always recommend Pyramid Point for every client due to the hike, it’s the perfect spot for couples who crave adventure and want to connect with the raw beauty of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It’s secluded, serene, and offers endless creative opportunities for unique, jaw-dropping images. From the birch trees along the trail to the dramatic views of Lake Michigan at the top, every moment at Pyramid Point feels like a dream.
