Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of the most breathtaking places in Michigan—and it just so happens to be the perfect backdrop for a dreamy, windswept engagement session. With towering dunes, expansive views of Lake Michigan, and soft golden light at sunrise or sunset, the dunes offer a timeless and adventurous atmosphere for couples who love nature and want their photos to reflect that.

“Josh took some amazing engagement photos for me and my fiance. We highly recommend him if you are in Northern Michigan and need a flexible and talented photographer- very fun if you have an adventurous side too! He helped guide through all posing/angles too, so the whole process was very easy and laidback. Very talented work!!!!” -Kelsey

Review from Client of Sleeping Bear Dunes Engagement Session in Northern Michigan

As a local photographer based near Traverse City, I’ve photographed dozens of couples here in every season and weather condition. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a meaningful and beautiful engagement session at Sleeping Bear Dunes.

How to Plan a Sleeping Bear Dunes Engagement Session in Northern Michigan

What Makes Sleeping Bear Dunes Ideal for Engagement Photos

There’s something magical about the way light moves over the dunes, the lake shifts from blue to silver, and the sand trails feel like something out of a storybook.

Sleeping Bear Dunes offers wide open space to explore, quiet moments away from the crowds (especially at sunrise), and a variety of backdrops including:

  • Rolling dunes
  • Forest trails
  • Lake Michigan shorelines
  • Hidden overlooks like Pyramid Point or Empire Bluffs
  • Historic structures like the Cannery and Glen Haven Village

Whether you want something adventurous and wild or soft and romantic, the dunes adapt beautifully.

When Is the Best Time for a Sleeping Bear Dunes Engagement Session?

  • Sunrise: My personal favorite. You’ll have the dunes to yourselves, the light is soft and golden, and the stillness is unreal.
  • Sunset: Gorgeous warm tones and more flexibility, but potentially more crowds—especially in summer.

The dunes look amazing in every season, but most couples aim for May through October for the best light, temperatures, and foliage. Here are a few timing notes:

  • Fall: Early to mid October brings beautiful golden tones and fewer tourists. Be prepared for unpredictable weather (and maybe some wind—which looks amazing in photos).
  • Cloudy Days: Don’t cancel! Overcast light is soft, flattering, and brings out the texture of the dunes and trees.

What to Wear & Bring for Your Dunes Session

The key to looking and feeling great? Comfort and movement. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Flowy outfits: Dresses, skirts, or layers that move with the wind photograph beautifully.
  • Comfortable footwear: Sandals or boots that are easy to walk in—we’ll likely hike short distances.

What Should I Bring to my Engagement Session?

  • Layers: Especially in spring or fall. The dunes can get chilly in the morning or evening.
  • Blanket or shawl: Adds texture to photos and keeps you warm.
  • Props: Bring anything meaningful (coffee mugs, books, hats, picnic gear). Keep it light and personal.

Logistics & Tips for a Smooth Session

Sleeping Bear Dunes covers a large area, so we’ll pick 1–2 key spots to focus on. Some of my go-to locations include:

  • Sleeping Bear Point: Offers dunes, lake views, and historic buildings nearby. Ideal for sunrise.
  • Pyramid Point: Requires a short hike but gives you sweeping views of the lake.
  • Glen Haven Historic Village: Great for outfit changes, variety, and storytelling.
  • Empire Bluffs: Perfect for moody skies and dramatic overlooks.

A few planning notes:

  • Plan ahead for walking/hiking. Some locations require 5–20 minutes of walking.
  • Bathrooms are limited; bring a small changing tent or plan to change in the car.
  • Be flexible. Weather changes fast. Cloudy skies, mist, or wind can actually enhance the vibe!
