Spring has finally sprung on Old Mission

And I couldn’t be more excited to get out and photograph my family session at Old Mission Lighthouse. After a very long winter, it’s my goal this season to capture as many of those beautiful Michigan sunsets as I can. I’d also love to tour the Old Mission Peninsula in the next week or so to photograph all the May flowers that are starting to bloom. But mostly I’m excited for the family sessions I have on the calendar this spring. Now that the weather has warmed up in Traverse City, I see families at the beach downtown playing in the sand, biking the Leelanau Trail, searching for shells at the Sleeping Bear Dunes. Everyone is so happy to be outside.

Family Session at Old Mission Lighthouse

For our family session, I met Rachel and Isaiah with their two sons Remy and Roan at the very end of the peninsula. I love driving the Old Mission Peninsula over the rolling hill, past the wineries with a view of the bay on both sides. This area reminds me so much of the California vineyards. What a perfect location for a family session. We met in the morning on a Tuesday and so there weren’t a lot of people out at the beach. From the moment the car was parked, Remy and Roan were ready to explore. 4 year old Roan started leading us to the beach. But Remy decided to go on his own little adventure with mom towards the lighthouse. I love the energy that Roan and Remy brought and capturing that natural curiosity was so much fun.

Soon, we all met on the beach for some family playtime in the sand. It was Roan and Remy’s first day at the beach this year and so they were very happy. Mom and dad played in the sand and chased the two boys around. Remy loved it when mom threw him in the air. “Fly! Fly! Please!” The photos of Roan and Remy flying are some of my favorite shots of this session. We slowly made our way along the beach finding pinecones and rocks along the way. And even though there was still a bit of snow on the ground, everyone dipped their toes in the water. Even me. My feet were freezing, but Remy couldn’t get enough of the water. Dad had to chase him down to keep him from going all in.

“Usually it’s pulling teeth to get my family to “pose”, but Josh just let us play and have fun! Thank you Josh, for coming to Old Mission and spending a morning with us! We’ll treasure your work for many years.” ~Rachel

We ended our morning at the beach with a nice family portrait in front of the Old Mission Lighthouse. Thanks Rachel, Isaiah, Remy and Roan for inviting me along on your family session at Old Mission Lighthouse! I had lots of fun!
