Top Family-Friendly Beaches in Northern Michigan for Your Next Photo Adventure

Planning a family photo session in Northern Michigan? Here are some of the most beautiful, family-friendly beaches and a few insider tips to make your experience extra special. For your convenience, I’ll include Google Map pins for each location so you can easily find your way. -Josh

1. Maple Bay Natural Area

Maple Bay is a lovely natural area with a peaceful mix of grasses and trees leading down to a rocky shoreline. It’s about a mile walk in, mostly flat and barefoot-friendly, though there’s a slight hill coming down from the parking lot. The area is quiet and feels wonderfully secluded, making it ideal for a more rustic, nature-themed family shoot. It can be busy during the day. I suggest early morning or late evening for less crowds.

Pro Tip: On peak holiday seasons, the parking lot gets quite full and it can be challenging to find a spot away from people. Visit in the late afternoon for that perfect golden light filtering through the trees. And bring some bug spray in the summer months just in case!

2. Private Airbnb Beaches

One of the easiest options for families is to use the little slice of beach that comes with many local Airbnbs. You can step right out of your rental onto the sand, which is great if you have small kids who might need quick breaks. While some private beaches may have docks or other structures in the background, we can easily choose angles that highlight the natural scenery.

Pro Tip: Make the most of this convenience, especially for early morning or sunset shoots. It’s a great way to keep everyone comfortable.

3. Elberta Beach (Lake Michigan Overlook)

Located just south of the Betsie River, Elberta Beach is a quieter alternative to the busier Frankfort Beach. You drive down a very steep hill to get to the parking area, and then it’s an easy, half-mile walk, perfect for larger family groups. You’ll have plenty of space and a more relaxed atmosphere than the beach in downtown Frankfort.

Pro Tip: This is a fantastic spot for a mid-morning session when the light is still soft. Pack a picnic and enjoy some family time after the shoot.

4. Empire Beach & Esch Road Beach

Empire Beach is a lovely spot with not only water views but also a playground and beautiful autumn foliage.

Pro Tip: For Empire Beach, consider a fall visit to capture those amazing colors. In the summer months, it can be more busy especially during the day.

Esch Road Beach, on the other hand, is a bit more secluded. It’s ideal for a private morning shoot if you want to avoid the evening crowds.

Pro Tip: Head to Esch Road Beach in the morning for a peaceful session especially in early morning and late evening. During peak holidays, Esch Beach can still be quite busy. I recommend choosing non peak times for less people and better light.

5. Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive

Though not directly on the beach, the overlooks at Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive are absolutely breathtaking. You’ll find epic dune views and lots of pull-off spots for a more private experience (sometimes requiring at 10 minute hike). It’s a great place for a sunrise session if you want to avoid crowds. Sunsets at Scenic Lookout 9&10 can be quite popular but if you are feeling adventurous, you can hike a little further up some dunes to get away from the crowds.

Pro Tip: Sunrise is magical here, and you can always find a quiet spot along the loop. It’s perfect for those sweeping, panoramic shots.

6. Sunset Beach in Downtown Traverse City

Next to the Delamar Hotel, this small beach is perfect for a quick, easy-access family shoot right in downtown Traverse City. Just be aware there may be a bit more happening in the background.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking for convenience and a downtown vibe, this is your spot. Early morning shoots can help you avoid the busiest times. From this location, we can also explore some beautiful downtown options.

7. The Homestead Condo Beaches

If you’re staying at The Homestead, you’ve got a beautiful private beach just steps away from your condo. It’s quiet and easy to access, making it perfect for a relaxed morning shoot.

8. Mission Point Beach on Old Mission Peninsula

Mission Point Beach is a beloved spot for both sunrise and sunset sessions. While it’s popular in the evening, if you come early in the morning, you’ll often have the place to yourself. The beach has a classic Northern Michigan charm, with gentle waves, shallow depths with large rocks to play on, and lovely views that are perfect for family photos.

9. Sleeping Bear Point

If you’re looking for a more private, dune-filled adventure, Sleeping Bear Point is a fantastic choice. It’s a bit of a hike (about 10 to 15 minutes) but that means you’ll often find it less crowded than Glen Haven Beach nearby. You’ll be rewarded with incredible dune views and a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for capturing those special family moments. 10. Good Harbor Bay Beach (Near Glen Arbor)

Good Harbor Bay Beach is one of the most iconic and family-friendly beaches in Northern Michigan. With its wide sandy shoreline, shallow water near the edge, and incredible views of the Manitou Islands on clear days, it’s easy to see why families love this spot. It’s especially great for kids because there’s plenty of room to run, play, and explore without feeling cramped. Access is straightforward, with parking close to the beach and only a short walk down to the water—no long hike required.
