Why Spring is the Best Time for Engagement Photos in Northern Michigan

If you’re dreaming of a Northern Michigan engagement session with empty beaches, golden light, and zero stress—spring is your season. May and early June are what I call the shoulder-season sweet spot: the dunes are quiet, the lake is still waking up, and the trails are yours to explore.

The weather? Just right. Cool enough for comfortable layers, warm enough for that flowy dress. And with the sun setting later each evening, there’s plenty of time to soak in the adventure. Lately, I’ve been lucky to photograph some truly epic spring proposals and engagement sessions, and this season never disappoints.

Couples love the relaxed pace, the quick photo turnaround (before the summer rush hits), and the chance to create something more than just a standard shoot. Some of my favorite engagement and proposal spots are Old Mission Peninsula with the blossoms, the Sleeping Bear Dunes in Empire for epic views and downtown Traverse City.
