How to Prepare for Your Senior Photo Adventure in Northern Michigan
Your senior year is one of the most memorable times of your life, and your senior photos should reflect who you are at this exciting moment. Here are some tips to make sure you’re fully prepared to have the best experience during your senior photo session:

1. Choose the Perfect Location
When it comes to picking a location, less is often more. If you’re only planning to wear a couple of outfits, one location should be perfect. For those with three or more outfits and an extended session, I recommend choosing two nearby spots for variety.

For seniors who love rustic, urban vibes, downtown Traverse City offers both quaint streets and marina backdrops. If you’re more adventurous and outdoorsy, Empire Bluff Trail and Treat Farm Trail are perfect for breathtaking dune bluffs and nature views. For an easier hike with scenic dune views, Sleeping Bear Point in Glen Arbor is a great choice with less of a hike.

2. Plan Your Outfits
Wardrobe is key! I suggest bringing at least three outfits and planning to wear two—one casual and one dressy. Don’t hesitate to showcase your personal style by adding accessories like hats, headbands, or special socks. If you’re planning a fall or winter session, bring a jacket or layers to stay warm.

Feel free to include uniforms, sportswear, or outfits that represent your activities and passions. Ultimately, choose pieces that make you feel like yourself and comfortable in front of the camera.

3. Incorporate Meaningful Props
Props are a great way to personalize your session. Simple items like your sports team uniform, musical instrument, skateboard, or even a bouquet of wildflowers can add a personal touch. Think about the activities that are meaningful to you—whether it’s a book, your dance shoes, or a favorite drink—and bring something that reflects what makes you, you.

4. Hair and Makeup: Keep It Real
I always recommend that seniors come as themselves. Wear your makeup as you normally would on any other day. We want you to look and feel like your true self! There’s no need to worry about blemishes either—I retouch every image to make sure you’re looking your best.

5. Best Time to Shoot
For the best light, I recommend scheduling your session during the first few hours of the morning or the last few hours before sunset—this is when the light is soft and flattering. While midday can create harsher shadows, an overcast day can provide beautiful diffused light, so flexibility with timing can work in your favor.

6. Posing Like a Pro
Before your session, gather inspiration from photo shoots, albums of your favorite musical artists, or even book covers. Bring at least a half-dozen pose ideas that reflect your style. Don’t worry, though—I’ll guide you throughout the session and show you previews of the shots so you can see how everything is turning out. Bring a friend or family member who will enjoy a fun session with you! And remember I take a lot of photos (over a thousand) to ensure we have plenty of options when creating your final gallery.

7. Prepare Your Mind and Body
Confidence is key! The more comfortable you feel, the better your photos will turn out. Get a good night’s sleep before your session and make sure you’re well-hydrated and nourished. On the day of the shoot, try doing three things that make you feel good, whether it’s listening to music, exercising, or enjoying some quiet time.
