How to Plan a Fall Elopement or Engagement Session in Northern Michigan
Dreaming of colorful trees, cozy sweaters, and photos that feel like a fall love story? Whether you’re planning a fall elopement in Northern Michigan or want to book an engagement session in peak foliage season, this guide covers everything from ideal locations to what to wear and how to plan around the unpredictable weather.
As a Traverse City-based photographer, I’ve helped couples explore some of the most breathtaking fall landscapes—through sunrise hikes, beachside proposals, golden hour vineyard sessions, and everything in between.
Let’s dive into my best tips to make your fall session stress-free, fun, and full of color.
When Is the Best Time to Book Fall Photos?
Fall in Northern Michigan usually peaks between late September and mid-October, depending on how far north or inland you go. Early to mid October is typically the sweet spot for bold reds and oranges in places like Empire, Glen Arbor, and Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Keep in mind:
– Sunsets are earlier in fall, so we’ll plan your timeline accordingly.
– Overcast skies are common—and that’s a good thing! Cloudy fall days create soft, flattering light that’s perfect for portraits.

Sunrise or Sunset? Planning Around Light
I always recommend sunrise or sunset for your session. Here’s why:
Sunrise:
– Peaceful and private—no crowds
– Soft, dewy light
– Cooler temps, perfect for cozy layers
Nicole and Patrick’s sunrise elopement at Sleeping Bear Dunes is a perfect example. We had the whole place to ourselves and the light was dreamy.
Sunset:
– Warmer light and golden tones
– Ideal for beach or vineyard backdrops
– Works well with relaxed afternoon timelines

Why Flexibility Matters: Embracing Overcast Days
While sunrise and sunset are ideal for that golden-hour glow, fall in Northern Michigan often brings overcast skies—and honestly, that’s not a bad thing.
Cloudy days offer soft, even light that eliminates harsh shadows and actually enhances the richness of fall colors. It’s one of the best types of light for portraits, especially in the woods or among colorful leaves.
That’s why I always encourage couples to stay flexible. If we lose the sun, we gain mood. Moody skies can make your photos feel cinematic and romantic. Whether it’s mist rolling in off the lake or a soft gray backdrop against vibrant foliage, we’ll adapt and make it magical.
I’ll guide you based on the light we have—so all you have to do is relax and enjoy the experience.

Best Fall Photo Locations in Northern Michigan
Old Mission Peninsula: A Favorite Fall Backdrop
If I had to pick one spot that never disappoints in the fall, it’s Old Mission Peninsula. With its rolling vineyards, sun-dappled woods, scenic roadside pull-offs, and views of both East and West Bay, it’s hard to beat. The variety of backdrops and colors make this place feel like a dream.

Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
For dune views and fall color, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a gem. With a covered bridge, multiple overlooks, and vibrant foliage in October, it’s perfect for easy access and outfit changes.

Trails of Empire, Michigan
Empire’s trails and beaches are fall wonders. The trees retain their leaves, and options like Empire Beach and the Empire Bluff Trail offer a mix of dunes, woods, and dramatic views.

Slow Down in Northport, Michigan
Escape the bustling scenes of popular trails. Northport boasts rocky beaches, a lighthouse, and serene forested views. Explore the Lighthouse West Natural Area and discover charming fall color in the town itself.

Near Downtown Traverse City
Opt for trails closer to Traverse City, like Old Mission Peninsula, Brown Bridge Quiet Area, and the Boardman River. Enjoy fall color a bit later in the season compared to Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Bonus Tip: Be Ready to Chase the Color 🚗🍁
One of the best parts about fall in Northern Michigan? Sometimes the most stunning fall color isn’t on a trail or overlook—it’s right along the road. A random curve lined with fiery maples, a quiet backroad glowing with golden birch, or a vineyard that unexpectedly hits peak color earlier than others.
That’s why I always tell my couples to stay open and curious. Some of my favorite engagement and elopement photos happened on the side of the road while chasing color at the perfect moment. I’m always scouting and ready to pull over if we find that once-in-a-season pop of red or orange.
So pack your layers, bring your sense of adventure, and let’s go find the magic—wherever it shows up.
