When it comes to planning a wedding, many couples dream of a seamless, stress-free day surrounded by the people who matter most. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of not just photographing small weddings but also guiding couples through the planning process to help make their day as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Here are my top tips for planning a relaxed and memorable small wedding, especially if you’re considering the beauty of Northern Michigan as your backdrop.

1. Keep Your Guest List Small

If you want to avoid anxiety and truly savor your wedding day, this is the golden rule. A guest list of 100 people or fewer allows you to connect meaningfully with each person while keeping the day intimate. A smaller guest count also helps with budgeting and ensures you won’t feel overwhelmed trying to socialize with every attendee. Trust me, this is a game-changer!

2. Plan a First Look

A first look can be a magical, tension-relieving moment before your ceremony. It’s a chance for just the two of you to share an intimate experience away from the crowd. Plus, it’s an opportunity to capture authentic reactions and portraits in a different location. We can always sneak away later for photos later as well, but the first look adds variety and calm to your day.

3. Choose a Venue with Everything in One Place

Simplify your day by selecting a venue where the ceremony, reception, and photo spots are all nearby. This eliminates the stress of shuttling guests between locations and gives you more time to enjoy your day. Some of my favorite venues for this are:

  • Downtown Suttons Bay: Quaint and picturesque with beautiful nearby photo ops.
  • The Homestead in Glen Arbor: Offers stunning views and plenty of scenic spots within walking distance.
  • Willowbrook Mill in Northport: A charming venue with rustic elegance.
  • Lake Bluff Preserve in Frankfort: A breathtaking location with serene views.

4. Give Yourself Enough Time

Your timeline is crucial to a stress-free wedding day. Here’s what you can accomplish in a few hours of coverage:

  • 30 minutes: First look and immediate family photos.
  • 30 minutes: Ceremony coverage.
  • 20 minutes: Family photos after the ceremony.
  • 20-30 minutes: Couples and bridal party portraits (onsite).
  • 1 hour: Reception highlights, including cake cutting, marriage license signing, and candids.

If your day involves travel between locations or more detailed coverage (like getting-ready shots), I recommend a five-hour small wedding package to capture everything without feeling rushed.

Every couple’s love story deserves to be captured beautifully. See how I can bring your Northern Michigan wedding day to life.

5. Consider a Day-Of Coordinator

For larger gatherings, hiring a day-of coordinator or wedding planner can be a lifesaver. They’ll handle the logistics, allowing you to focus on enjoying your day. While family and friends can help, a professional ensures everything runs smoothly and lets me dedicate my energy to capturing every moment.
