A Guide to Winter Engagement Sessions in Northern Michigan
Sleeping Bear Dunes | Traverse City | Snowy Adventure Sessions
Winter engagement sessions are magical, and Justin and Allyssa’s adventure at Sleeping Bear Point Trail was the perfect example of why. With fresh snow, a backdrop of towering pines, and Lake Michigan’s icy blues, their session was nothing short of breathtaking. But, as stunning as winter engagement photos are, there are a few important things to keep in mind when planning your own session in Northern Michigan.

Justin & Allyssa’s Snowy Adventure ❄️
Their Valentine’s weekend session was full of fun, movement, and epic landscapes. Since the Sleeping Bear Point Trailhead was snowed in, we parked near the Coast Guard Station, capturing some stunning wide shots of them walking through the snow with the historic Coast Guard station in the background.
Outfit Tip: Allyssa’s colorful shawl stood out beautifully against the white snow, creating a vibrant contrast that made their photos pop. If you’re planning a winter session, bold colors or cozy layers can add so much visual interest.

As we hiked into the woods, the falling snow settled on their clothes, and the snow-covered pines made the perfect backdrop for their portraits—especially since Justin was excited about capturing photos among the trees. After making our way into the dunes, they had a blast running down the slopes and soaking in the view of the Lake Michigan shoreline in winter’s glow.

Tips for Planning Your Winter Engagement Session
1. Pick an Accessible Location
Many popular engagement session spots become difficult to reach in winter. For example, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is closed due to deep snow, and some trails aren’t maintained. I always scout locations in advance to find the best accessible options.
📍 Great winter engagement locations:
- Sleeping Bear Point Trail – A mix of pines, dunes, and a stunning lake overlook.
- Empire Bluffs Trail – A longer hike with sweeping views of Lake Michigan.
- Downtown Traverse City – Perfect for an urban winter vibe, with cozy coffee shop stops.
- Hickory Hills – A fun spot for couples who love skiing or snowboarding together.
- Old Mission Peninsula – Rolling vineyards and scenic coastal spots.

2. Dress for the Cold (and the Camera) for your Winter Engagement
Winter weather adds a unique challenge—but layers can make all the difference!
- Wear warm, stylish layers(coats, scarves, gloves) that look great in photos.
- Bold colors stand out! Jewel tones, deep reds, and earthy greens contrast beautifully.
- Consider hand warmers & boots—staying comfortable helps you focus on having fun.

3. Be Prepared for Snow & Adventure
Winter engagement sessions are for the adventurous couple—expect to trek through the snow, embrace the cold, and have fun with it!
- Snowfall adds a dreamy atmosphere—but we may need to be flexible with timing.
- Some locations may require a short hike (bring boots!); others are easier to access.
